House Cleaning: A Labour Intensive Work

It is Saturday morning, and you are facing the dreaded weekly cleaning task. Cleaning the house can be boring, tiring and labor intensive.

Not to mention, it takes away time that you could be enjoying doing other things. If you have skipped some of your cleaning duties during the week, your Saturday cleaning tasks can take a whole day. This is why most people don’t like cleaning their homes.

Here are some simple strategies to ensure that your home cleaning does not result in heavy labour intensive work.

  • Start with the easiest room first. This will either be the smallest room or the room that’s the least dirty already.
  • Gather up all the things that don’t belong in that room and put them back into the rooms or places they belong.
  • Clear all horizontal spaces and pick up things off the floor.
  • Do the things that take the least amount of work but have the biggest impact first. Make the beds, clean off the counters, put dishes away, sweep the floor.

Prioritize labor intensive duties last.

Don’t decide to tackle your paperwork pile or ironing pile till the very very end. Otherwise decide to just handle it on another new day.

Just stuff it in a folder or put it in a bag and move on. Consolidate those things in one area until you have the time to tackle them.

One way is to usually gather up your loose mail and paper and dump it all on your work desk. Your desk then becomes the last place in the house to get organized.

The idea is to consolidate all the messiness together and then come to the point where it becomes too visible to ignore.

Sometimes it’s a good idea to time yourself and say “I’m going to clean for the next 20 minutes.”

That way, you don’t have to feel like you’re spending all your free time cleaning, but 20 minutes is actually enough time to make a big dent in general messiness.

Multi-task when possible.

You can load  your washing machine while the kids are eating their breakfast. You can also clear your kitchen or sink drying rack when waiting for tea to boil. Those little 5 minute tidying sessions really make an impact in the overall appearance of your home.

Cleaning the kitchen is labour intensive as well. Here are some of the duties you can expect to be completed within just the kitchen area:

  • Scrub sink
  • Clean windows and window tracks
  • Base boards dusted and wiped down
  • Clean small counter top appliances
  • Clean refrigerator exterior
  • Clean refrigerator interior if requested
  • Outside of range hood cleaned
  • Top and front of range cleaned
  • Drip pans cleaned
  • Sinks cleaned and disinfected, chrome shined
  • Counter tops cleaned and disinfected
  • Clean outside of cabinets and drawers
  • Clean exterior of large appliances
  • Wipe down inside and outside of microwave
  • Clean table and chairs
  • Floors vacuumed and mopped
  • Trash emptied
  • Cobwebs removed
  • Thorough dusting
As you can see, cleaning can be a labour-intensive task that can knock you out especially after a long day at work. Hence perhaps hiring external help
to support you in living in a clean home is not such a bad idea.
